This article is part of a complete guide to preparedness - Getting Prepared, An Untrained Housewife's Guide. Everything you need to have a simple survival plan for you and your family!
I’ve been writing a series on Getting Prepared for Any Power Outage, and I remembered Lehman’s. What a great resource for purchasing tools and equipment for ‘off the grid’ living. But it is also so expensive and impractical that I will only have the perfect off-grid home in Fantasyland! Let’s dream…
Isn’t she beautiful? This is installed right into your existing kitchen. How great would that be during a power outage? Heck, you’d never need gas or electricity to cook or bake again! You’ll need to have a source for firewood, though . . .Less than $3K!
REFRIGERATOR I was not able to find a non-electric fridge, but Lehman’s does have propane and natural gas refrigerators. This would be a great convenience if you had the energy source.
TOILET
That’s what I call surviving! How much would this be than pottying out in the woods! I want one – only $2300+! Lehaman’s says: “Uses about 0.5L of water per flush with the remote composting unit below, offset or on outside wall.
- Install up to 3 low flush toilets per Low Water Remote System
- A gravity-drop required for flush
- Toilet included in complete system price
- Advanced composting process
- Modular composting tank requires minimal space
- Non–Electric”
WOOD HEAT
How pretty is this? We have a fireplace insert at our house and it kicks out a lot of heat. Two problems I offer so that you can try to avoid them in your own planning:
First: We have no way to vent the heat to circulate it through the house. But since we are in Fantasyland – put one in every room!
The second problem is that I have very little space to cook anything and no way to bake anything. I can only heat or cook something in a small pan, and right now, it’s not enough for the six adult-sized living in my house.
LAUNDRY
How much handier is this than a big pot over an open fire? I want one . . . less than $1K!
And this clothes dryer is less thant $200!
Well, this little visit to Non-Electric Fantasyland has been a blast! Maybe, someday, my whole house will be prepared for ANY emergency . . . but I’m not going to hold my breath. I’m off now to see what other edible weeds are growing in my backyard!
